Some would say air-conditioning is no longer a luxury in humid Singapore. Before you shop for this essential item for your home, keep these useful advice from the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) in mind.

1) You should only hire someone who is trained to install the air-conditioner. Check the Building and Construction Authority (BCA)'s website here that specifies the requirement of a trained installer.

2) Certain types of air-conditioners are classified as Controlled Goods under the Consumer Protection (Safety Requirements) Registration Scheme in Singapore. As such, they are required to carry the SAFETY Mark, and you should insist on one. To verify if the air-conditioner is a Controlled Goods and if it is registered, check SPRING Singapore's Consumer Product Safety Regulations here.

Tip: Find out what you should do when you detect non-registered Controlled Goods here

3) Read the product warranty terms and conditions and consider these warranty terms when choosing between various brands.

4) Ensure that all communications with the vendor are written and not merely a verbal consent. It's always a good idea to put down verbal agreements in writing, as a safety precaution should dispute arises.

5) Worried about your carbon footprint? Singapore's National Climate Change Secretariat (NCCS) has a list of handy tips on installation, operation, and maintenance that guides on how to use your air-conditioners properly. NCCS also administers the Energy Labelling Scheme in the country that helps you save on energy bills.

6) Be informed of methods of dispute resolutions. Should you encounter unresolved disputes, approach CASE for assistance or file your claim at the Small Claims Tribunals.
