5 Treats for your pets

+

Pets have come to be regarded as important members of the family in many homes, and it's not uncommon for owners to go all out when giving their adorable little ones a treat. Here are five ways you can surprise your pets with something special for the love they shower on you.

33 Erskine Road. Open Tue-Sat, 11am-8pm; Sun, 11am-6pm

Located along a row of quaint shophouses in Chinatown, Woofer and Purrlensky is a gem among ubiquitous pet store chains in Singapore.

Step through the glass doors and the interior looks like a charming little cottage, complete with a Chesterton armchair. Its wooden shelves are stocked full of premium pet accessories, beds and clothes fit for the fanciest pups and kitties.

Dress your pet to impress in a leather collar (from $68) and leash (from $98) made locally from Italian leather. The store also carries a range of cute outfits made with soft, comfortable fabrics, imported from Korea.

Why not pick up a grooming gift set ($128) while you’re at it? Your pup will get a microfibre bath towel, handmade organic oatmeal dog soap made from shea butter, aloe vera and vitamin E, a coat tamer with silk protein that provides intense moisture, and a chewing toy made from natural fabric which he can play with while you slave away to get him nice and clean.

Finally, no dog or cat needs a luxury handcrafted wood bed ($880), but it certainly doesn’t hurt them to have one. Your pet will sleep soundly on an Italian fabric cushion bed and wooden frame painstakingly carved from rubber wood and rattan.

Barking Good – Delicious, handmade and healthy dog treats

Who doesn’t love to reward their beloved pets’ good behaviour with a tasty treat? But many off-the-shelf dog treats are full of preservatives, additives and other chemicals that may be harmful to Rover.

Get all-natural, human-grade treats that are lab-tested by a certified pet nutritionist delivered right to your doorstep from Barking Good, an online store that specialises in artisanal dog treats.

Quality is the priority here. The store provides the ingredient list and nutritional information for each of its products, and, to maximise freshness, makes all goodies only after an order has been placed.

For a daily snack, your pooch can munch on crunchy and soft treats (from $6.50 for 50g). Flavours like cheddar and apple, and salmon and broccoli paws sound enticing even to my human ears.

Barking Good also makes birthday cakes from a range of meats – chicken, pork, beef, turkey, lamb or duck – frosted with either potato or sweet potato, which you can personalise with a message (from $20 for a four-inch cake made with chicken meat). Adorable blossom pupcakes – cupcakes for your pup – are also available (from $22 for a box of four made with chicken meat, 50g each).

For really special occasions, you can even order a customised cake. Owner Dionne once hand-rolled hundreds of tiny potato “rice grains” to make a cake in the shape of salmon nigiri. No request is too tedious for man’s best friend.

Pet Widget – You’ll never lose your pet again

Website: http://www.petwidget.com/

You left the front door open and Snowy made a run for it. The entire family goes in search for her but she’s nowhere to be found.

Thanks to Pet Widget’s badge ($26.75, available at NaiiseBugis Street Online and selected vet clinics) – an NFC and QR code-enabled pet ID tag – you won’t have to put up Missing posters and spend days losing sleep, worried sick about what might have happened to Snowy.

Here’s how it works: download the free Pet Widget app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and create your pet’s online profile. Then, link this profile with the badge by scanning the QR code. Load your contact details, such as mobile number or e-mail address, and additional information about your pet, like past vaccinations and medication.

Anyone who comes across Snowy can scan her tag with their smartphones and access this information. If the person doesn’t immediately get in touch with you, check where the tag was last scanned in the app so you can head to that location.

Pet Widget also serves as a pet social networking platform. Upload photographs of your pet and make friends with fellow pet lovers. Or view listings of pet-friendly places and read reviews by other users. It’s guaranteed to bring you closer to the local pet owner community.

When you’re away, you can keep an eye on your pet via a high-definition webcam installed in every room.

Guests at this luxury pet hotel will sleep on faux leather orthopaedic beds, enjoy 24-hour air-conditioning and complimentary meals served twice daily. They’ll also get two fitness walks a day and plenty of time to socialise with the other guests in the Doghill Garden.

Add-on services include grooming, spa treatments and gourmet meals prepared in-house, with mouth-watering dishes like slow-cooked venison stew ($18) and homemade rosemary pork sausages ($16) on the menu.

When you come to pick up your pet, why not spend the day lounging by the Bone Pool with your pooch before getting back to the grind? Can’t swing by to fetch Puppy home? The Wagington has a concierge service that can arrange pick-up and drop-offs at your convenience.

RA Healing Centre – Holistic care for your pet

Website: http://www.holisticpetcentre.com/

513 Serangoon Road. Open daily except Thu and eve of public holidays. Mon-Fri, 11am-8pm; Sat-Sun, 10am-6pm.

When your loved one is sick, you get them the best care from trained professionals so they can be restored to full health. Similarly, pets need just as much TLC as their humans when they’re under the weather.

RA Healing Centre provides animal rehabilitation services to enhance your pet’s recovery from injury, surgery or diseases. One such service is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (from $150 for 60 min), used to increase oxygen levels in diseased tissue, which improves the body’s ability to fight infections and reduces inflammation and swelling.

Pets can also receive therapy massages ($50 for 60min) and chiropractic treatment to stimulate the body’s own healing abilities.

To complement veterinary care, you must tend to your furry friend’s mental and emotional wellbeing as well to get him back in the pink of health. At RA Healing Centre, trained practitioners conduct Bodytalk sessions (from $165 for one session) with pets in which they help you communicate with your pet to detect stress or behavioural issues, and address them to facilitate the healing process.
