What’s more spectacular than the look of the beautifully restored Ming- and Qing-dynasty villas set amidst a dense camphor forest, is the fact that every structure and tree had been relocated from over 700 kilometres away into the modern metropolis.

Originally situated in Fuzhou district, which was part of the Jiangxi province, the 50 antique villas (some up to 650 years old) and over 10,000 camphor trees faced an uncertain future when the area was slated to be cleared to make way for a reservoir in 2002. Fortunately, philanthropist and Fuzhou-native Ma Dadong conceived a plan in time to save the villas and trees, by collaborating with luxury hospitality brand Aman to transport them to another site in 2007.

Located just outside the busy city centre, Amanyangyun is the result this monumental feat in ecological and architectural conservation. Every brick and column was carefully reassembled, while the camphor forest — including mature trees over a 1,000 years old — had to be replanted and settled in.

With the project finally completed, the new-yet-old resort is a picturesque vision of calm and tranquility. Stepping into the hotel, visitors are transported back in time to ancient China. The resort’s traditional facade gives way to modern interiors designed to respect the look and feel of the villas’ illustrious past. The multiple wood, stone and bamboo features within lends a touch of modernity while still maintaining an aura of Zen.

Making use of an earthy and neutral palette, the hotel sets the tone as a resting place for tired travellers and those seeking to learn more about China’s rich history. Each villa comes with a pool and 24 contemporary one-bedroom Club Suites that are designed with a combined bedroom and living area to give guests the ultimate luxury stay. Carved lattice shutters are also used in rooms to filter out natural light while still keeping the theme.

The resort is set to open in October, but interested guests can register their interest for updates on reservations. Not just available for temporary stay, the hotel also offers the villas to those who are interested in permanent residence. During your stay, you can expect all the modern amenities and spa facilities, along with a list of cultural activities to engage in, such as Chinese calligraphy and participating in a Chinese tea ceremony.
