Picking a paint colour is such an exciting process, but it is not as simple as it seems. We got Stephanie Kraneveld, the global colour training and knowledge manager with Dulux, to share with us three no-nos to remember when you are at the paint shop.

When picking a colour: Never pick a colour without applying it to the context of your home. “How big your window is, what sunlight you get – afternoon light is warmer and morning light is whiter – and what kind of lights will be used in the room will change how the colour eventually looks. Know the above, and pick the right shade from the colour family you like,” says Stephanie.

When pairing colours: Colour has three components: hue (what colour family it is e.g. blue or red), chroma (the higher the chroma, the more intense and vibrant the colour) and light reflection value (white and pastels have high reflection values).
"Remember not to use too many hues in a room; pick a maximum of three colours, and each in a different chroma. We suggest a light shade for the majority of the walls, and a high chroma colour for accent walls,” says Stephanie.

When attempting an ombre wall: Never put the lighter shade at the bottom, as it will look unstable. “A darker colour at the bottom anchors the room, so that it does not seem top heavy,” says Stephanie.
