The Pantone Color of the Year 2017 is Greenery (15-0343) — a mild but fresh shade of green. This zesty shade conjures the memory of spring, dew on grass, flourishing foliage and the freedom of being in the great outdoors.

Embodied literally and figuratively, greenery truly is the quintessence of nature and life — and it’s something we gravitate to, especially when in need of a respite from our fast-paced modern lifestyle.

“The colour of the year, Greenery, provides us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalise, Greenery symbolises the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. The Pantone Color of the Year, by the world-renowned authority on color, is a symbolic expression of a mood and attitude in current global culture.

In the context of a dense city or urban environment, a green space is a gem. More developers are striving to incorporate greenery and easier access to nature into both public and private spaces, riding on the trend of biophillic design that focuses on the human-nature connection for better quality of life. This is recognised even in Singapore, already known as a garden city, which is evolving to become a more biophilic city.

This year, the colour is easy on the eyes — green is said to be soothing and invigorating to look at, but it is also an attractive, pleasing “trans-seasonal” hue. It works in many colour combinations that appeal across the realms of interior and architecture, fashion, beauty, graphic design, and even the culinary arts. And since nature never gets it wrong or goes out of style, it will always be your muse.

Green, and what it epitomises, inspires in more ways than one. Here are some inspiring spaces:
