Designed by Lim Ai Tiong (Lato) Architects, this two-storey corner terrace house with an attic is home to a couple and their two sons.
Their brief for principal architect Lim Ai Tiong was to maximise the floor area in the house, which sits on a relatively conservative land area of 2,300sqf. To address this issue, Ai Tiong took advantage of the attic space, and designed a 45-degree pitched roof — the maximum allowable space by local authorities. Dormer windows were installed to create a more seamless look.
The metal pitch roof extends out from the house to double as sunshading.
They also work perfectly to frame the views of the surrounding when looking out from inside the house.
To complement this attic family room, Ai Tiong also designed book shelves and storage space for the family's mini library along the corridor. Natural light fills the interiors, so there is little reliance on electrical lighting in the day.
A void in the centre of the house is where the staircase now sits, which works to effectively separate the spaces in front and at the back, namely the living and dining room on the first floor, respectively. A neutral colour palette gives the home a calming ambience, complete with statement furniture pieces such as the Eames lounger and ottoman in the living room.
The dining area sits alongside the dry kitchen, which has an island counter that offers additional seating when the family entertains guests. This space is also kept airy and breezy, thanks to full-height sliding doors that allow natural ventilation and circulation.
The open-concept design also gives the home a very welcoming ambience, complete with natural light streaming into the interiors.
Even in the master bathroom, Ai Tiong incorporated a six metre-high skylight to allow natural light into the space. Wall lights at intermediate heights accentuated the volume, while offering illumination at night.
