Ceiling Details

Question: I need to add a drop ceiling to hide lighting fixtures. Is there a more modern way to create ceiling detail than plaster mouldings?

Answer: If you are looking for something streamlined yet dramatic, consider adding a timber finish to your drop ceiling. Timber-clad ceilings are a mid-20th-century trend that is back in vogue. Use timber boards in natural tones like oak and teak or bleached effects like whitewashing for a sophisticated look.

If cost is a factor, go for timber veneer rather than real wood parquet. A veneer over plywood board is much lighter, and both faster and easier to install. A warm wood veneer can also make a cold, open space feel cosier.

For this sleek city apartment (above), Lato Design Architects added drop ceilings of subtly striped timber veneer over the living and dining areas. With just these simple additions, the interiors gained a strong geometric element, a touch of natural colour as well as unique style.
