Kid-friendly kitchen
Question: My kids like to bake, and
I’d like to encourage them to help out with kitchen chores, too. How can I kid-proof my workspace to preempt any
nasty accidents?
Answer:Start by selecting slip-resistant flooring, and avoid sharp corners on counters and tables. Get appliances such as hobs with controls on the top so kids cannot reach them easily. Also, make sure your work area for small appliances is well away from a water source. Don’t install glass-fronts on the lower cabinets and put safety latches on all the windows.
Consider how your kids can contribute or at least entertain themselves while you work. If they offer to set the table, put the cups, plates and other items they need to get the job done in lower cabinets. Add a small fridge to your layout to store healthy foods like milk, juice and nutrition bars on their level to avoid raids on the main fridge. Set aside part of your worktop for them and stash paper, markers and workbooks in the drawer beneath.
Don’t forget to keep a set of old baking trays and utensils for your kids to use for their cookie projects. That way, you can protect your favourite equipment from cooking disasters.
