Leather matters
Q: I keep hearing conflicting advice about using leather furniture in Singapore. is leather a good idea when I have two young children? How does humidity affect leather furniture?
A: Leather is more durable than fabric, so it is a good choice for a family with kids. However, choose a dark colour that won't show up ink marks and such, as removing stains from leather is difficult. Humidity will not be a problem as long as the furniture is not going anywhere where the air is still. Leather is organic, and will start to smell and deteriorate if affected by mildew.
Don't treat your leather furniture as something too precious to use. In fact, the more you rub the leather, the softer it will become. Place the furniture in an airy spot as leather is not that absorbent, so it may be uncomfortable to sit on in a stuffy area.
Good-quality leather is pricey, and many mid-range types have been developed to meet demand. For instance, "pleather" sofas look authentic, but are made of synthetic fabrics. Find out the material of your chosen sofa as that will determine its care.
Synthetic leather is an easy-maintenance material (just damp-wipe), but real leather needs more care. Never use water to clean stains. Instead, dust regularly and give it a rub-down every few months with a leather upholstery cream.
