Pocket Garden
Q: I want to add some landscaping to the grass verge at the side of my semi-Detached house. But at just 2m wide, there doesn’t seem to be much that can fit. what should I do?
A: The long, linear proportions of the side garden can be used to create some exciting vistas. Here are some ideas that you can adapt, depending on site considerations and budget.
If you like water gardens, consider adding a narrow moat. A water feature with lush planting of lotuses, reeds and other water plants would give you soothing views from your side windows and patio – place some outdoor furniture there so you can enjoy it all. Situate a large sculpture or striking pot on a pedestal at the far end of the pond to give the eye something to focus on.
However, if maintenance is an issue, go for a pebble garden punctuated by a few trees and shrubs. Eliminating the traditional lawn will cut down tremendously on tasks like cutting grass and weeding. Group the planting in clusters in front of the windows. Choose big-leafed plants like tree ferns, yams, giant heliconia and ginger. If you select hardy, easy-care plants, you should be able to manage with just a little weekend gardening.
