Pre-War Era

Q: We hope to keep some elements in our pre-war HDB flat. How would you suggest we modernise the fully-tiled cement counter in our L-shaped kitchen, and can we change its sink and hob?

A: Turning rundown pre-war spaces into modern homes is very trendy now. The trick is to figure out what to retain and what to toss. Old tiles are fragile, so keep them only in areas not used for heavy-duty work. Hence, it is advisable to replace the sections around the stove and sink with a modern counter material. It is a simple job to remove the old sink and hob.

The old cement structure is more durable than any new kitchen cabinetry as it’s totally waterproof, so keep the base when updating your kitchen counter. You can clad the top with stainless steel for an industrial look, or white Corian solid surfacing for a soft, contemporary feel. Ask the contractor to fit the open sections under the cement top with wooden cabinets. The effect will be an appealing blend of new and old.
