Unfinished Business

Question: My contractor left my renovation unfinished and refuses to take our calls, but we’ve already paid for the materials. Should I keep hounding him or find another contractor?

Answer: Contractors who refuse to finish the job and disappear with homeowners’ money are endemic in the industry. The problem worsens whenever there is a construction boom as the more professional firms will be reserved by the mega-projects. Inevitably, the vacuum is filled by dodgier firms.

As the contractor refuses to return, it is better to get on with your life. Ask your friends for referrals of reliable contractors, but expect to pay more as they are clearing up someone else’s mess. Do send a registered letter discharging the errant contractor, stating your unhappiness with his conduct and that you are hiring someone else to finish his job. This will protect you if he shows up demanding the rest of the contract sum.

To get your money back, take the matter up with the Consumers Association of Singapore or Small Claims Tribunal. Your contractor will have to face you in court as ignoring the summons means the judgment will go against him.
