Wet floor

Q: My bedroom’s parquet floor got very wet. Now, parts of it have faded, and in other areas, the wood is uneven. Will there be termites? How messy will it be to replace it with tiles?

A: A damp wood floor will be a magnet for termites. Try to dry it out more thoroughly by turning on the air-conditioner all day and bringing in a powerful floor fan to help draw out the moisture.

You can live with the warped floor for a bit, but the parquet strips will probably pop up soon or split, depending on how much traffic goes over it. Your best move would be to replace the damaged parquet with hardy ceramic tiles.

Any renovation is messy and inconvenient as you’ll have to move your furniture out of the room before the contractor can hack up and replace the ruined floor. The whole process will take about a week.
