When East Meets West

Q: We are looking for a design direction for our condo. We like sleek looks, as well as Asian, modern resort and elegant eastern European influences. What is this style and how do we get started?

A: Well, the best way to describe your style is “eclectic” – a mix of modern Asian and European influences. You seem drawn to the ethnic influences and elegant detailing of Asian resorts as well as classical European motifs. Luckily, these themes are popular with designers today, so you will have no problem finding building materials and accessories.

The important thing is to balance the various styles cleverly, so you don’t end up with a culture clash! Do it by having the main pieces of furniture, such as the sofa and dining table, in neutral colours and clean shapes. After that, have fun mixing and matching – for instance, by pairing the streamlined sofa with a Balinese coffee table!

In the end, do remember that you are not living in a showflat. This will be your home, and you can put any art object or piece of furniture you fancy into the mix.
