Much confidence and flair is needed to juxtapose a Mies van der Rohe daybed in snowy white leather with its Chinese cousin. And it takes derring-do to execute an all- black bathroom, right down to an ebony hued basin mixer. But that's just the kind of decorator this corporate lawyer homeowner is.

Nothing is more uninspiring than a home filled with furniture all bought from the same place. The owner faced no such situation, having amassed furniture, paintings and decorative objects for years. Playing with scale and throwing together different period styles, he created a casual, spontaneous look that makes his designer pieces appear approachable rather than precious showroom icons.

Being an instinctive decorator, the resident has been known to be hit by inspiration even late at night. He thinks nothing of dragging huge carpets and chairs around, on his own, to create new arrangements. In fact, last we heard, he'd installed a Chinese screen as a bedroom door and dragged in a new chaise longue!
