Mix And Match

Bring a Singaporean Chinese and an American together, and you can be sure their shared collection of things is bound to be eclectic. Couple Davina and James Weingaertner had recently relocated from Hong Kong back to her homeland, and with them, they had brought many pieces of well-loved furniture and knick knacks sourced while living abroad.
Their brief to designers Ken Tan and Chris Low of Pop!con was to design a look that was well, eclectic. The couple also indicated that they "did not want lots of built-in furniture" as they felt that would have been too sterile a look. "They liked the idea of mixing their existing furniture pieces together to showcase their personalities," explains Chris. The result is a warm, tongue-in-cheek home—a reflection of the fun-loving, adventurous couple whom the designers described as "very refreshing clients to work with."
As most of the couple's existing furniture pieces are dark solid wood pieces, the designers went for light green, yellow and gold hues on the walls for contrast. In the dining room, for instance, a sturdy Chinese wooden cabinet stands against a pale gold metallic wall framed in deeper gold wallpaper to make a rich counterpoint. In the living room, the simple set-up—consisting of the couple's existing wooden coffee table, French Louis-style armchair and oriental TV console bought from Just Anthony—is accessorised with sheer rainbow-coloured curtains that reflect soft hues of green, pink and gold on the walls when sunlight bounces off the fabric.
