Old-school charm

Southeast Asian artworks are not the only "found-around-the-region" elements in Jessica Lee's new home. Family heirlooms such as antique wooden trunks, furnishings such as hammered copper lamps, and even vintage floor tiles all celebrate her Asian heritage. She also enjoys painting, and her bohemian tendencies are reflected in the eclectic cosiness of her three-level abode.

Jessica enlisted the help of good friend Caroline Chin, owner of interior decorating boutique Arete Culture, in styling her place. Colonial-style black and white floor tiles imported from Vietnam are a design highlight on the first floor, while vintage wood-topped bar stools balance the sleekness of the modern kitchen with a quaint charm. The antique trunks that her grandparents brought with them when they migrated here are given pride of place in the foyer and the master bedroom.

"You cannot stint on furniture if you want a house to be cosy and full of character," said Jessica. Let's add to that a storehouse of memories, too, in keeping and displaying items that are full of history and sentimental value.
