Mr and Mrs Tham were looking for a certain sense of je ne sais quoi, or a distinctive but intangible quality that would "push the design envelope" for their two-storey semi-detached house. They commissioned architect Randy Chan from Zarch Collaboratives to design the home, of which Mrs Tham says: "We were game to try new ideas, and Randy delivered the most interesting concept."

Almost as large as a bungalow plot, the 3,980sqf lot allowed Randy to treat the structure as an independent unit and visually "detach" it from the neighbour's party wall. "This was an opportunity for light and ventilation to enter the home," he says. As a result, the living room and even the en suite bathrooms are all bright and airy.
