Ever since Ben Tan moved into his house, he has had strangers knocking on his door to find out who his designer is. This grand and glassy head-turning structure has even starred as the location for several local TV productions. As director of Hauslab Design & Build, which builds homes and "dream environments", the homeowner, a bachelor, didn't hold back when it came to designing his own house. The 10-year-old corner terrace sits next to a canal, which Ben saw as a brilliant 20m buffer between his home and his next-door neighbour's. This created the chance to open up the house as much as possible with glass, without worrying about privacy.

A boundary wall of angled metal slats provides sufficient concealment for the ground floor and garden while still maintaining ventilation.

"We mostly work and live in enclosed space, so to have an open plan on the ground floor is much sought after," he explains. The space where he loves to start the day and to come home to is the front patio. This is where he enjoys the morning sun and winds down to soft music and lights at night. The patio overlooks the garden and pool which he calls his "resort".
