Theatre of Dreams
"Movie night" for this expatriate family doesn't mean visiting the DVD rental place to pick up a flick. They simply choose what they want from the library of 600 DVDs preloaded into their Kaleidescape movie and music server, part of the state-of-the-art home entertainment system installed in the 1,000-plus sqf home theatre in the basement of their Sentosa Cove home.
The family views movies on a massive 139-inch projector screen, with cinema-quality sound from a surround system concealed within false panels. A DNP Supernova Core screen was chosen as it prevents ambient light from affecting the image, especially since "most families don't like to watch movies in pitch darkness," says Soon Ong, managing director of Clarity AV, the company that put together the set-up. "Besides wanting the best equipment, the homeowners' only other request was that it was user-friendly enough so even their six-year-old boy could operate it." Centralised remote controls that sync all the equipment, and even the lighting, provide that ease of use.
Soon worked with interior designer Shaun Shahrome of Soho Design Partnership on the room's aesthetics - a cosy den of warm wood and stone textures lit by recessed halogen lighting. "For better sound, we also recommended they use upholstered furniture," says Soon.
Costing a cool six-figure sum, the home theatre is great for family time on rainy days, says the homeowner. But who gets to choose the movie in this family of five? "It's democratic. Everyone gets a turn," he laughs.
