Intimate spaces
Furniture company The Shophouse's new 3,000plus sqf showroom at leafy Rochester Park might be smaller than its old digs at Lock Road, but it actually works better, says owner Laura Bartlett. "The ‘real' setting helps customers better visualise how the pieces will look in their homes," she says of the double-storied black and white building, which exudes the look and feel of an actual residence. "There's a lovely warmth and charm about the location," she adds.
The Shophouse retails living and dining room furniture, lamps and tableware. Wood furniture has been given a contemporary lift with lighter stains, and new materials like anodised steel, stainless steel and glass have also been introduced in its designs. "Currently, 25 per cent of the items on the shop floor can be customised," Laura says. From the wood used to the upholstery fabric and dimensions, all can be dictated by the customer so they purchase a truly unique piece. Interior design consultancy services are available, too.
Custom furniture designer Gerald Kong says the use of alternative hardwood such as longan and jackfruit will prove more economical for clients. In the same vein, Laura has good news for her customers. "We've taken five to 10 per cent off prices. We want to do is to build customer loyalty." All the more reason to check out their intimate new showroom, then.
