Combining modern luxury with traditional architectural heritage is no easy feat, but The Capella’s latest addition to its hospitality projects in Shanghai – the Jian Ye Li estate – meets both requirements, and does so in an extremely stylish way.
Designed by interior design company Blink, which specialises in designing luxury hotels worldwide, The Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li sits in what used to be three-storey, brick and stone-accented townhouses on a sprawling plot of land that stretches over 46,000sqf.
With the facade carefully restored and preserved, the building now houses facilities that include 55 villas ranging from one- to three-bedroom suites, a spa, gym, pool and a restaurant and bar by Michelin-star chef Pierre Gagnaire.
From the outside, the building looks unassuming.
Yet, as you step into the salon-style lobby, a cosy ambience fills the space. Its earthy colour palette is complete with intricately designed, locally sourced wood-carved screens and exposed architectural roof beams overhead. Throughout the resort, the design team adapted traditional Chinese elements and married them with French-inspired features.
In the suites, wainscoted panels on the walls are complemented with silk wallpaper, while the furnishings include details and materials such as wrought iron, metal legs and button-upholstered headboards often seen in elegant French homes. Hardwood side tables, and chairs made using wood, rattan and fabric, as well as handwoven carpets, are sourced from various parts of China.
The Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li is the answer to every modern traveller’s search for a luxurious yet old-world experience.
