Find out what’s in store when you visit the National Design Centre this weekend. Singaplural showcases the best design elements from the multi-faceted creative industry in Singapore. The theme for this year is “A state in play”, encouraging the audience to experiment and look out of the box for design solutions to everyday problems.
Singaplural runs from 5-15th March 2018.
1) Kvadrat x Publicworks : Perspective
Perspective is a little play on your sense of sight. Whether you are coming from the street corner, or from the Victoria Street and Middle Road crossing, be teased by Perspective and challenge yourself to find the sweet-spot where all lines seem parallel. It may be a simple visual deception and play on perspectives, but there is nothing simple about the material used. The vibrant upholstery textiles are from Revive 1+2 by Kvadrat. They are made from post-consumer recycled polyester and are especially created with a focus to reduce the environmental impact both in production and natural resources.
2) Kvadrat x Publicworks and Formica x Produce
Visitors are set for a surprise when they enter the atrium of the National Design Centre. In the forefront is a fabric sculpture by Kvadrat x Publicworks, called Headspace, while in the background, the gigantic and organic looking pavilion is constructed out of two types of sustainable Formica laminates.
3) Studio Dam: Chroma Light Series
This enlightening exhibit takes the viewer through the various stages of exploration with the use of bone-china porcelain in the making of a modern lampshade. The various stages of adding different pigments and varying the sizes and shapes of the lamp shades show how each element results in a radically different look in the end-product.
4) Antalis x Meta Studio: Take a peek
Paper is a material that constantly inspires designers and artists. This time round, the collaboration has resulted in a glowing tunnel filled with crumpled art paper blinds. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the installation by lifting the blinds up to find various poetic verses.
5) JVCKenwood x AK+: A room to eternity: Koone’s nature and sound experience
What is undoubtedly the most overwhleming sensorial experience to be had at Singaplural 2018, visitors step into a wooden teahouse structure, which transforms into a forest scene within. The state of art high resolution nature sounds from KooNe, delivers the tender sounds of birds chirping and a gurgling stream in the distance, effectively sweeping you away from reality into a dreamy forest-scape.
6) Cellini x Ngee Ann Polytechnic: Etc lab: Hidden Gems
Mentors from the furniture company, along with students from the local polytechnic partnered to create a series of furniture pieces produced with the traditional weaving and wickering techniques. The team was inspired by the cultural weavers in Lombok, Indonesia, and found ways to inject the age-old methods into contemporary designs.
7) Ewins x Gabriel Tan Studio: The mad hatter
Step into a reflective world created from three-dimensional thermoforming and light-diffusing properties of Veromobi Alba acrylic panels. Designer Gabriel Tan created hat-shaped lamp shades using four different tints of dyed acrylic and in three pendant lamp configurations.
8) Benel x 11H: Play at work
Take a look at the office of the future, with open lounge areas where employees can meet to discuss, explore and have fun at the same time. The modular furniture offers myriad variations and moves away from the homogenous look typical of conventional offices.
9) IDF Singapore x Arttd’inox x Trigger Design: Steal play
Find out how stainless steel can be sculpted into animal shapes at this booth. The animal-themed creations also highlight the issue of conservation and the need to protect endangered animals for the benefit of our future generations.
10) Pinch design: Play book
This installation is a life-sized version of a pop-up book. Targeted at helping children to develop skills through active play, the realistic environments created by the pop-up scenes offer the ideal space for the young ones to role-play and learn.
