The homeowner of this four-room HDB flat in the East worked with interior design firm Distinctidentity to design his home such that it can accommodate and complement his collection of Asian artefacts and furniture pieces.
An avid traveller who loves visiting Japan, the homeowner decided to display some items he had collected — including a signboard from Japan — to greet guests when they enter the main door.
To complement the range of accessories in the home, the designer chose a basic palette of materials such as concrete screed flooring.
The kitchen is spacious enough to allow a large seating area.
The designer explains that the home's generous size allowed them to be more creative with the layout.
The living area was made by combining the original living area with the first bedroom.
Cosy nooks like this reading corner are carved out of the spacious living area.
Similar to traditional Japanese homes, sliding doors close off the rooms — the living area is on the left and the music room is on the right.
Two bedrooms were merged to create the spacious master bedroom. The homeowner likes to use pendant lamps throughout the home to create a soft ambient glow.
The wardrobe and the chest of drawers at the side of the room were handed down by the homeowner's dad.
Part of the $70,000 renovation went to designing the bathroom, which has a dark colour palette yet restful ambience.
