The nature-loving homeowner of this maisonette apartment enjoys the outdoors, but having Pasir Ris Park a stone’s throw away wasn’t enough. He installed a green wall from Prince’s Landscape in the balcony, which is so luxuriant that “many cars have stopped by along the road to look at it. There was even a passer-by who requested to come in for a look – he stayed for half an hour just admiring it,” shares the homeowners.

This tiny balcony in a Kembangan condominium is a small but concentrated patch of wilderness. In that 2.5m by 0.6m space, there are about 200 plants growing from pots, with some hung overhead, and creepers such as Piper ornatum climbing the walls.

One of the homeowner's favourite parts of his home, this balcony always has something for him to work on, new growth to marvel at, and the plants make me happy.
"I’ve lost count of the number of plant varieties I own. Some of them include popular houseplants like monstera deliciosa, monstera obliqua, ficuses such as the fiddle leaf fig or lyrata, ficus elastica, snake plant or sansevieria, and spider plant. I also have dedicated areas for orchids, ferns, a frangipani tree, a few varieties of cacti and succulents, and a railing just for air plants. There are also edible plants like rosemary, mint, basil, lavender, lime and bay leaves," he shares.

As this couple travels often for work, they selected plant types that don’t require as much maintenance and attention. They even purchased wild plants from Bangkok’s Chatuchak market. “On Tuesdays, the market has lots of exotic plants on sale,” Irene says. Because of the many plants at home, their daughters are also involved in gardening, she smiles.
