This ground floor unit in Tiong Bahru is a gift from four siblings to their elderly mother. With the help of architecture practice Asolidplan, they converted the once dilapidated apartment into a comfortable home not just for their mom, but also for them to regularly visit.
The perimeter of the home, between the bedroom and the common corridor, features a space that works flexibly as a living, dining, guestroom and bar.
This is where the siblings gather over drinks when they visit. To create a bar-like setting, “timber beams” overhead conceal custom light fittings which produce a dim and cosy glow.
Tiong Bahru is also the estate in which the siblings grew up in, so the designers took pains to invoke nostalgia whilst rejuvenating the old unit at the same time.
For instance, they removed layers of old paint to reveal distressed details on several walls.
On another side of the unit, an original brickwall is exposed after removing old paint.
The rear garden is enlivened with lush new landscaping that can be appreciated from the bedroom.
The kitchen may have been updated with modern minimalist fittings but furniture from their old home keeps it feeling familiar.
The washbasin was intentionally positioned to face the lush outdoors.
