If you don’t know what interior design in the 60s looked like, this home will give you plenty of clues. Designer Christine Leja from Bconnected Living Concepts was inspired by the vibrant era, and designed this home in a colourful, California-esque style.
Located in Mallorca, Spain, this house was built in the 60s and features six bedrooms. Christine kept the facade as is, but reconfigured the space into three large bedrooms and bathrooms. “Instead of a low and closed living room, it is now an open living space with 5m ceilings. [The glass doors] created a ‘transparent and clear space'”, she says.
After using the same concrete screed floor throughout the home, Christine then furnished the home with Mid-Century Modern furniture pieces in colours like magenta, purple and olive. Brass lamps from Delightfull, a brand from Portugal, adds a sophisticated touch.
The final result is, as Christine calls it, a “potpourri” of her inspirations. She uses statement items like the Egg chair and an antique waterski collection, as well as different coloured tiles, to corresponding style.
“Different-coloured handmade tiles in the bathrooms, six different wallpapers, copper taps in the bathrooms, and a tailor-made turquoise kitchen transforms this house into an inspiring and unique living space,” says Christine.
To create a sense of openness, Christine removed almost all interior walls and used lots of glass.
Want a bold feature wall? Opt for the wall where you rest your head at night. The wall you are facing should be kept simple.
The bedroom opens to a large outdoor space. Sweeping sheer curtains create a restful ambience.
These handmade mosaic tiles were customised in the south of Spain, whereas the marble used throughout the home came from Italy.
“The only vision and concept I had, was a mid-century bungalow with this typical L.A. spirit. I think it was this old and huge Yucca tree in the garden, which reminded me from the first moment to West Hollywood. This inspiration carried me through the entire project,” says Christine.
