Passed on at the age of 87, Alessandro Mendini was one of Italy’s most respected designers and architects.
In 1959, he received his degree in architecture, which marked the beginning of an era where fresh and new designs were bursting at the seams.

1. Proust Armchair
Lined with a multi-coloured fabric, this armchair was recognised as a 20th century design icon, and renowned for its form and aesthetic perfection.

2. Yellow Tower
Amongst his most iconic designs is this golden tower, forming the heart of Groninger Museum in the Netherlands.

3. Mendini Pavilions
In addition to the yellow tower, the Groninger Museum’s Mendini Pavilions are clad in his signature ‘Proust motif’. He first applied this motif to his iconic Chair for Proust in 1979.

5. Anna G. Corkscrew
Designed in 1994, the Anna G. corkscrew has become a cult favourite amongst design enthusiasts around the world. It pays homage to a real woman, featuring a female smiley face, and a body which resembles a blue dress.

In 1978, Mendini gave a distinct makeover to Gerrit Rietveld’s famous ZigZag chair by adding a cross to its back, making it even more outstanding and one-of-a-kind.
