For a recent project, Studio Wills + Architects was tasked to design a bungalow. It is part of an exclusive residential enclave, which is made up of mostly semi-detached houses "strung together" in a necklace-like configuration. To avoid a wall-like structure, the team had to think out of the box while still keeping within the bounds of the development's configuration.
Their strategy involves the fragmentation of the building volume into smaller volumes; instead of a mass structure, it now looks like "many houses within a large house". Apt for a multi-generational family. "This way, every occupant is given their own personal space with minimum intrusion when privacy is desired," says William Ng from Studio Wills + Architects.
The home includes six bedrooms (one master, one junior and four bedrooms), a family room as well as an entertainment room, and a "back-of-house".
While the other houses within the development are predominantly grey, a brown colour palette was chosen for this bungalow to distinguish itself from the rest. The connector or the link-bridge sports an all-black look.
The interior also features an earth-toned and black colour scheme. Occasional accents of chocolate and taupe creates depth in this massive space. The island counter is clad in Caesarstone's Emperadoro while bedrooms are lined with white oak flooring.
The smaller building masses allow each interior space to receive light, ventilation and views.
It also resulted in rooms that are autonomous and independent of each other.
"Every room is different. Some are lofty with double volume space, one has a private garden, and another has a terrace that looks over the estate. The guestroom is located nearest to the entrance such that it does not intrude into the privacy of its host," says William.
While the sand-like colours exude a soothing and earthy atmosphere, the black elements are sleek and contrasting.
Alternating light and shades, and views of the courtyard, is part of the visual experience.
The entire development of Victoria Park Villas consists of 106 semi-detached houses and 3 bungalows.
