Renovation: How to design a sleek, modern kitchen

Modern design refers to the design and decorating style during the Modernist era, which focuses on simplicity and function. It is not to be confused with contemporary style, which refers to what is current and trendy, although they are often used interchangeably.

So, just what are the essential elements for the modern kitchen?

FLAT-PANEL & FRAMELESS CABINET DOORS

This is the most minimalist-looking type of door and cabinet construction. The doors are flat and smooth, and cover the entire front of the cabinet such that you don’t see a frame around each door. All you see are shadow gaps when the doors are closed.

SLEEK AND STRUCTURED HARDWARE

Go for cabinet door handles or drawer pulls that are understated. These can be tubular or flat bar pulls, as long as they’re linear.

HORIZONTAL LINES

Focus on width rather than height. A key aspect of the look is long, steamlined counters, top-hung cabinets and panelling. Accentuate the length using matching hardware with slim and long designs, as well as with details such as groovelines.

LACK OF ORNAMENTATION

No busy patterns, fussy textures and multi-colours. Think simple glass and stainless steel and lay out tiles in a stacked pattern. You can also consider natural, untreated or epoxy-painted concrete finishes for walls and floors.

NATURAL MATERIALS

Keep things clean but add elegant touches that showcase the beauty of nature. Examples are the veining of marble in large slabs and grains of wood.
