If you want to consume the plants in your home, you'd probably want soil of good quality.

What constitutes good soil?

  1. Air pockets: For air and water to flow freely for healthy root growth
  2. Micro-organisms: To break down organic matter and transform it to useful nutrients for the plants
  3. Organic matter: Living matter that are decomposed by micro-organisms, beneficial for healthy plant growth
  4. Some water-retaining ability: Able to keep water in the soil for roots to absorb

Creating your soil mix:

  1. Sphagnum peat: Type of moss that decays very slowly, and can hold air and water
  2. Compost (black gold): Made up of decayed matter, and increases the soil's water-retaining ability and helps moderate pH of soil
  3. Vermiculite: To expand and create space for air and water. It also provides nutrients such as potassium, calcium, magnesium
  4. Perlite: Keep soil light and flulffy, as it keeps water on its surface

Composition of soil mix

  • Sphagnum peat – 35%
  • Compost (black gold) – 35%
  • Vermiculite – 15%
  • Perlite – 15%

Example: 3.5 cups each of sphagnum peat and compost, 1.5 cups each of vermiculite and perlite

Where to get the mix?

You can find them in most of the larger plant nurseries.
