If you are on the hunt for good towels, know that there are three types: Luxe, Mid-range, and regular towels.

LUXE

Egyptian cotton is a superior cotton that is softer and more absorbent than typical cotton towel. “Egyptian cotton is made up of long staple fibres which make a strong, durable fabric,” says Pansy Phon, buyer for Robinsons bath department. Such towels can last up to 10 years. Look for cotton content – 100 per cent is best. Read the grams per sq m (GSM) detail on the label – it’s the measurement of quality and ranges between 300 and 800 – the higher the better. Each of such towels are priced about $50 and upwards.

MID RANGE

Microcotton towels are fluffy as an Egyptian cotton towel but is cheaper. Made with premium cotton that’s soft and absorbent, it is lighter and easier to handle than premium makes. Friven & Co and Aussino are some of the brands that carry these towels, priced at around $39.90 each.

REGULAR

The cotton or cotton-polyester blend material used for most towels have been woven in a way to make it absorbent. Polyester is added to prevent shrinkage and increase durability, but it also makes the towels less absorbent. Look for soft and velvety towels that feel relative heavy. Double-folded ends and thick stitching make them more durable. Prices usually start fom $7.90.

So what size should you get for towels?

To ensure your towel is not too big or small, take note of these measurements. For adults: a 68cm by 137cm towel is an optimal towel size. It’s not too long to handle, yet is wide enough to cover yourself. You should be able to hold it by the corners and open it to its full length with your arms outstretched.

For kids aged seven and above: a 63cm by 125cm towel is a good size. The length of the towel should reach to about your chest level. For younger kids, buy according to their height.
