Got a leaky pipe you can't stop, or a dangerous electrical snag that's putting your child at risk?

Here are 6 handyman resources for all sorts of home maintenance issues.

1. Bulky Item Disposal

Want to get rid of a nonworking appliance? Moving and need to offload furniture fast?

The licensed workers at Junk To Clear can do it for you. Ring 6749 2306 to learn more or get a free quote online (prices start at $80 to dispose a small sofa). While the company is not a non-profit, it says it does its best to recycle as much junk as possible, including donating to families in need.

HDB dwellers, log on to your respective town council website to arrange a removal for free or a fee.

2. Plumbing Problems

What to do if a pipe bursts in the middle of the night?

Call the Plumber Singapore hotline at (800) 833 2133 any time of the day. Its licensed and registered plumbers charge by the job, not the hour (from $60 for a clogged toilet).

Alternately, ring the Singapore Plumbing Society at 6294 9252 to have the nearest plumber dispatched to your home within three hours (rates per job range from $60 to $900 and up).

3. Room Painting

Paint gets everywhere: on the furniture, carpets, parquet flooring, your clothes... unless you know what you’re doing (and even if you do, who has the time?).

Have Painting Services Singapore come to your HDB flat, condo or landed property for a free onsite viewing (call Piyo, 9736 7920) or request a quotation online. Full payment isn’t due until after the job is complete; estimated prices range from $800 for less than 1,000 square feet to $1,500 and up for more than 1,800 square feet.

4. Electrical Snags

DIYing electrical repairs can be a dicey proposition.

CWC Electrical Engineering Service is a government-approved, 24-hour electrician service that can help you deal with everything from power failure to rewiring and electrical extensions. Call Chief Electrician Jacky Chong at 9858 7555 for a quotation and site survey.

5. Landscape Solutions

Research proves looking at nature boosts your psychological health.

But if you’re not blessed with a verdant view, and don’t have a green thumb, don’t despair. Goodview Garden & Landscape can design your greenery and then keep it maintained (from $120 per visit for regular garden maintanance). Call 6293 9694 for a consultation.

6. For Jacks of All Trades

HRD Professional Handyman tackles tasks from installing a new power outlet to remodeling your entire kitchen. It covers its contractors’ work within 90 days.

Prices vary widely; call 6782 9200 for a quote.

Tip: What’s Legal in SG?

Independent contractors (such as Singapore’s many helpful “uncles”) are often uninsured for unforeseen injuries that may happen on the job. According to the Ministry of Manpower, all contracted employees in Singapore are protected under the Work Injury Compensation Act (WICA), which allows employees to claim work-related injuries without legal action.

So, while it's not illegal to hire a non-licensed contractor, for peace of mind, go with one who's properly insured.
