House Tour: Two-storey restored shophouse with lots of character and vintage knick knacks

When two people build a home together, it can be disastrous if their tastes are polar opposites.

Eng Kwee - or EK - is partial to contemporary styles with lots of colours, while his wife Hwee Min prefers vintage.

When they moved to their Joo Chiat shophouse in 2011, they had to reach a happy compromise on the style of the home.

The renovation of the home offered a clean contemporary white canvas on which to layer Hwee Min's organic vintage pieces.

The couple also own many quirky knick knacks collected during their travels over the years.

The tall backless shelf showcases memories from the couple's childhood and thier flea market travel buys.

The home's best chill-out spot is by the pool, lit by gorgeous daylight and cooled by natural ventilation.

Hwee Min's favourite part of the house is her bedroom which leads to a glass-walled bathroom and out directly into the pool.
