Low sugar snowskin mooncakes? Yes, they exist, and the Simply Her team has shortlisted the best 5 you should try this Mid-Autumn Festival.
SALTED CARAMEL WITH PEANUT PRALINE [Editor’s Rave]
Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant, Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel, tel: 6831-4708.
$61 for a box of eight, available from Aug 11 until Sep 15.
It’s a new flavour concept, but one that evokes the nostalgia of old-school peanut candy. The filling is rich and lavish – a blend of white lotus seed paste with salted caramel and toasty peanut bits, and at its heart, a salty peanut praline encased in a chocolate shell.
TANGERINE LEMON WITH MATCHA RED BEAN PASTE
The Fullerton Shop, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, tel: 6877-8178.
$60 (classic box) and $71 (premium box) for four, available from now until Sep 15.
While it sounded like a confusing potpourri, we were pleasantly surprised by the result. The bittersweet matcha-and-red bean paste was a good foil to the ambroisal, zesty fragrance of the tangerine lemon centre.
CHILLI TRUFFLE [Great Find]
Baker’s Well, 35 East Coast Road, tel: 6348-6864.
$63 for a box of eight, available from now until Sep 15.
It’s an avant-garde combination for a mooncake, even among funky snowskin flavours, but the chilli-and-bitter-chocolate pairing worked. The heat is slow-burning – enough to intrigue without overwhelming the senses.
SENCHA GREEN TEA WITH JAPANESE RED BEAN
Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant, Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel, tel: 6831-4708.
$63 for a box of eight, available from Aug 11 until Sep 15.
Carrying a subtle matcha fragrance, the elegant bitterness of the green tea paste quietly drew us in, leading to the centre layer of mildly dulcet red bean paste. It’s a little austere on the sweetness – perfect for seasoned matcha lovers.
ILLUMINATION
TWG Tea, available at all TWG Tea salons and boutiques, including #B2-65 The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, tel: 6565-1837; check twgtea.com for store locations.
From $11 for a snowskin mooncake, available from Aug 13 until Sep 15.
We like how the pitch black snowskin makes a bold statement and contrasts sharply with the creamy tone of the black tea-infused praline paste. Even with the white chocolate-coated orange marmalade centre, it’s not too sweet – another tick in our book. But we would have loved it if the tea character was dialed up by several notches.
