MAHOTA COMMUNE
#03-31, Kitchener Complex, 809 French Road, tel: 6291-6522, open daily 9am-10pm.

WHAT IS IT: Just a 5-minute walk from Lavender MRT station, Mahota Commune is a 20,000-square foot store (approximately half a football field!) that integrates different aspects of wellness living under one roof. It houses a supermarket selling organic and health food products, a restaurant and cafe serving organic fare, a TCM clinic as well as an activity space that hosts yoga and meditation sessions.

WHAT TO EAT: The Mahota Kitchen serves up a range of dishes cooked with organic produce and ingredients. One of the main highlights is the Mahota Hot Pot (from $18), which features their own organically-grown produce such as mushrooms, homemade tofu and sauces made fresh daily. At the pantry, breads are made with unbleached and wholemeal flour. The café also offers a range of slow-pressed juices and organic teas and soda.

WHAT TO BUY: Besides fresh organic produce and organic food products, the supermarket also has a wine section that stocks over 70 organic and biodynamic (wine farms that use ecological practices) wines from brands such as Churchview and Morgan.

WHAT TO DO: There are free meditation classes from Monday to Friday (12.30-1.30pm) as well as elementary and intermediate yoga sessions on various days of the week. Look out for health talks conducted in their activity space from time to time; some are even complimentary!

GROUNDED+YOGA MOVEMENT
Level 2, 22 Martin Road, tel: 6262-2414 (for Yoga Movement) and tel: 6836-4695 (for Grounded), open daily 8am-9pm.

3 lifestyle stores in Singapore that you can spend the whole day eating, shopping, exercising and whiling the day away in

WHAT IS IT: Yoga and a healthy menu share an idyllic space – Yoga Movement runs the yoga studio, while Common Man Coffee Roasters (a café on level one of the same building) runs Grounded, a café that offers up a menu centred on healthy and hearty meals. If you’re not a yogi, come here for the tranquil setting, which, located among the trees, make you feel like you are away from the chaos of the city.

WHAT TO EAT: The selections at Grounded are wholesome and light enough to eat after a yoga session.  For starters, the Country Cousin Espresso Cranberry Balls ($5) features a combination of oats, flaxseeds, peanut butter, dark chocolate, cranberries and freshly ground coffee. For something more substantial, there is Matcha Pancakes ($16) that comes with a serving of dragonfruit jam, whipped mascarpone and lavender honeycomb. A yoga workout would warrant an AvoMango ($10) smoothie comprising a blend of avocado, mango, apple juice, passion fruit, pomegranate and matcha.

WHAT TO BUY: Yoga Movement carries yoga apparel and accessories from brands such as Bokeh, Lululemon, Ohsosom, Dharma Bums and Tonic.

WHAT TO DO: There is a range of yoga classes available here, from beginner’s yoga and hot yoga to ones that train your core muscles and those that help you relax. Choose one that fits your pace and your comfort level. A single class is $30, while a package of 10 classes is $220 and a package of 20 classes is $380.

ZEPPELIN & CO
#02-78, Sim Lim Square, tel: 9271-7927, open Tue-Sun 11.30am-8pm.

3 lifestyle stores in Singapore that you can spend the whole day eating, shopping, exercising and whiling the day away in

WHAT IS IT: A typical shop at Sim Lim Square is stacked with electronic goods and is not designed for you to linger. But it’s a different story at audio store Zeppelin & Co., which feels more like a café. The industrial-style space sells coffee and cake. Customers also get to sit around and listen to the music using the audio gear sold at the store. If you want a less intimidating place to get an anniversary present for your hubby, this store is it. It’s cosy and inviting, unlike any other electronic store, so you feel completely at home. Bonus: the staff is friendly too!

WHAT TO EAT: There is a range of beverage choices including the signature Breaking Ground ($7), a nitro cold brew that comes with a dense chocolate taste with a nutty sweet finish. There are also teas from Ette Tea, a boutique local tea brand that offers gourmet blends in South East Asian Flavours like Nasi Lemak ($8) – a combination of houjicha, genmaicha, coconut, osmanthus and pandan, as well as homemade cake selections from Inthebrickyard. The cakes change weekly, but can include flavours like their popular Pulut Hitam, Early Grey Lemon or Yuzu Matcha.

WHAT TO BUY: The store specialises in portable audio, including headphones, earphones as well as portable music players, amplifiers and Bluetooth speakers. The brands range from well-known ones like Sennheiser and Bose to niche indie labels such as Simgot and Stax. Prices range from $20 to $20,000.

WHAT TO DO: Chill, relax and listen to tunes from their music collection while sipping your cuppa, or chat with the folks at Zeppelin & Co, who are audiophiles themselves, about music. There is also a decent magazine selection (Monologue, Rolling Stones and Brutus) for you to browse.
