Run by two passionate individuals, Sam and Sue Chua, Neko no Niwa has established Itself as not only the first cat cafe in Singapore, but also a resource centre for everything cat-related – including running SPCA-supported workshops. He shares with us some useful tips about living with cats.
What can one expect from these cat workshops?
Firstly, anyone can attend them, from cat-owners to people whodon’t know much about cats. There is a lot of misinformation about cats, so our workshops touch on science-based, yet easy-to-understand discussions about their food, health and hygiene, and what owners can do to create a safe and loving environment for their felines.
What’s one thing your cats have taught you?
Contrary to popular belief, cats can be needy, too. One of our cats had over-groomed himself, which is a sign of anxiety, and we realised that closing the bedroom door when we’re not home (to reduce the accumulation of fur on the bedsheets) meant closing off a safe space for him. Humans leave scents, too, and cats take comfort in being able to smell their parents when they’re away. Giving him access to the bedroom stopped the over-grooming.
Share with us some cleaning methods that are cat-friendly.
Try to avoid phenol-based floor cleaners (they turn cloudy when diluted), which can be toxic to cats. If you’re unsure of the ingredients, at least let the floor dry before allowing the cat to walk over it as any active chemicals – when transferred to the paws and fur – run the risk of being ingested when the cats groom themselves. Also, use an insecticide that is safe to use around pets and small children.
What should homeowners keep in mind when designing cat-friendly features?
Cat walkways are hard to reach and clean, but if you don’t mind it, ensure there are sofas, tables or perches of a safe height nearby; a six-foot drop from a high shelf to the floor is too risky. The surfaces they jump on and off from shouldn’t be too smooth, either; textured surfaces allow cats better grip and balance.
