How to create a focal point for each part of a home

This designer created interest in every corner of her own two-storey apartment with eye-catching, flamboyant furnishings and art. These stand out well against an understated backdrop of white walls and warm timber flooring.

The apartment has an L-shaped living area, one side of which has ornate Baroque-inspired pendant lamps suspended over low lounge seats. This draws the eye up above to the raised ceiling and also helps zone the seating area.

A quirky "spoon-shaped" coffee table is just the right size for this cosy TV area. It also bring in an element of fun!

The easy chair and stool were reupholstered in a bold python print and paired with an animal skin rug in colours of similar hues, adding interest to a plain walkway.

This is a clever and creative makeshift bookcase, actually made out of simple acrylic low tables!

Even the staircase isn't neglected. The area has the feel of a gallery with paintings displayed on the walls and iconic chairs on the landings.

Instead of the usual matching nightstands, towering, oversized sculptural vases flank the low bed, creating drama.
