Hot Seat - Air Chair

Launched in 2000, the Air chair, manufactured by Italian furniture company Magis, demonstrates how a deceivingly simple design is actually a sophisticated and highly functional object.

Why we love it

The Air chair is made of polypropylene with glass fibre added, and is constructed using gas-injection technology (of which its designer Jasper Morrison was a pioneer), which allows for continuously smooth surfaces. Morrison says it was inspired by “the shape of an ideal wooden chair, if it were possible to carve it any way you liked”. The chair is available in a palette of beautiful colours and is suitable for any environment, indoors and out.

Who designed it

With his signature minimalist approach, English product and furniture designer Jasper Morrison has created objects that exude visual restraint and high functionalism. He likes to produce items that don’t call for too much attention to themselves, but instead modestly exist as part of everyday life.

Even as a young creative, Morrison was determined to design for industrial production. Throughout his prolific career, he has nurtured strong ties with Vitra and Cappellini, as well as Magis, Flos and Alessi.

What it inspired

Part of the Air family are the stackable Air armchair and the folding Air Chair, which is available with or without armrests. Completing the collection are the Air table, the Air low table, and the Air TV table. All produced using the same gas-assisted injection-moulding process, they are just as lightweight and ergonomic as the original Air chair.

The Air Chair is available at XTRA.
