House Tour: Combining feng shui and style in this HDB apartment

For their first home - a five-room HDB in Choa Chu Kang - this young couple tasked the renovating and decorating to two experts: a geomancer who is a close family friend, and designer Ray Sim of 2Form Interior Design.

While the couple believe in feng shui, they didn't want the home to look too traditionally Chinese, and Ray translated his design concept from the couple's auspicious colours and desire for something contemporary.

White saloon-style swinging doors carved with an Oriental motif contrast with the gold-coloured columns and jade green wall stripe.

Spray-painted glass panels in green visually connect the dining room to the living room.

Subtle details like a geometric motif and a red wall highlight this Chinese fusion theme. A carved Oriental motif screen echoes the red on the wall, as well as the pattern of the saloon-style swinging doors to the bedrooms.

The light-brown wood panels in the bedroom are urbanised with white wire lamps. Mustard yellow sheets bring out the honey hues of the wood elements in the master bedroom.

By weaving in subtle references to the homeowners' auspicious colours and clever material applications, the designer has created a refreshing take on Chinese fusion - a theme that suits the young couple's contemporary tastes just fine.
