House Tour: Simple industrial-style HDB home in Serangoon

After a decade of living in their five-room HDB flat in Serangoon, this couple in their 40s decided on a long-overdue facelift for their home.

William Chan of Spacedge Designs later discovered that the desired "renovation" would be a case of stripping and returning the place to its bare basics than adding new materials and decorations.

William allowed the architectural elements of the space to take centrestage, using only raw materials to "keep the look as industrial as possible" as per the husband's desire.

Birch logs from Style:Nordic add a hint of rugged texture to the space. The wood elements also help to temper the starkness of the concrete floor.

Energy-saving fluorescent tubes illuminate the home, resting on slim aluminum cable trays that seem to traverse the ceiling beams.

The black laminate cladding of the cabinet interiors elevates the raw plywood structure from utilitarian to stylish.

The existing bedframe was simple enough for the home’s new style.

Simplicity is the key to maintaining the industrial look of this home, and the couple seems to be happy to comply.

The couple spent only $90,000 (exclusing furniture and appliances) on their renovation.
