House Tour: Take a peek into a Tiong Bahru walk-up apartment!

WY-TO has given us the gift of this amazing pre-war, walk-up apartment in Tiong Bahru. The bright and airy space needed plenty of renovation to give the owner the open-layout he wanted while preserving the original structure.

A few walls were knocked down to give the owner a large, open layout. New floors were added and wall-mounted shelving added to the living room. Now the beautiful space is large enough to house a low bookcase, a grand piano and the dining table and chairs. We love how the warm wooden floors and clutter of belongings brighten up the otherwise all-white home.

The home is always extremely bright and sunny thanks to the large balcony. The old ventilation blocks at the top of the balcony helps add character to the space as well.

Because the owner entertains often, he wanted an open-concept kitchen with a large dining table close by. To match his home, the owner used retro-print tiles and used a wooden dining table. A stylish contrast was created when the designer added the cylindrical cooking hood and copper-plated pendent lamps.

The key feature of the old apartment was retained and simply refurbished as it added an old-school charm to the home. The green-glass shutters help the walk-up entrance feel more inviting.

Behind the shutters is the master bedroom. A small space just large enough for two pieces of furniture: A bed and a Louis XV-style armchair. The room is also extremely bright and cheerful because the owners leaves the green shutters open, and the bed faces a window that overlooks the tree-scattered carpark.

An ingenious pivoting door was placed along the corridor to provide the owner privacy when needed. Laid flat against the wall, it only hid the bathroom from view, leaving a long corridor with a wash basin on the side. Pulled out, it separates the bathroom, wash basin and guest room away from the main home.
