How to make your fresh flowers last longer

Adding bleach, aspirin, soda water and even Listerine to your vase of flowers are some of the suggestions offered on the internet to help your flowers last longer. 

Here’s the truth: None of them work.

There have been numerous tests to see which of these individual substances would help your flowers last longer, but alone, they don’t make a difference. Put them together, and you make a pretty potent flower preserver.

What you need

  • Water
  • 2 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • ½ tbsp Bleach
  • 1 tbsp Sugar

Step 1: Cut off half an inch of stem from your flowers. This prevents air from being sucked into the stem and blocking your plants uptake of water. It also removes any bacteria growing at the ends. 
Step 2: Fill your vase with water. Just two-thirds of the vase is enough. The best water to use for fresh flowers would be water with a PH level of about 3 to 3.5PH.
Step 3: If you use tap water has a PH level of about 7, so bring the PH levels down and make it more acidic by adding lemon juice.
Step 4: Add sugar, this will duplicate the sugar rush that occurs during photosynthesis. A downside to this is that it also promotes bacterial growth.
Step 5: Combat the bacterial growth with some bleach. Give the mixture a good shake and pop your flowers into the vase. (The water will turn cloudy, but not to fear! It’s fine.)

Tip!: Change your vase every three days and cut off another inch from your stem bottoms.
