How to turn an HDB flat into a loft-like pad

From a cramped 893sqf space to an inviting loft-style home, this three-room HDB flat’s makeover is certainly one to be envied over. Designed by the homeowner and his interior design-inclined friend, the home sports a variety of 12 wall finishes, including the quintessential rugged red bricks, as well as cleverly mirrored ceilings. Here are five tips to transform your small home into a spacious loft.

1. USE MIRRORS

This home made a smart, albeit unconventional, move of fixing mirrors to the living room ceiling, creating an illusion of taller walls and a more open space.

2. HACK THE WALLS

By removing as many internal walls as permitted, the now open-plan HDB flat apartment is able to receive more natural light and ventilation. This bedroom, in particular, had a puny window that allowed in minimal light.

3. USE BRICKS

Industrial, red bricks are characteristic of the “loft” look. Use brick veneer on feature walls throughout your abode for a strong, consistent theme. This home utilises three distinct variations of the feature to create more visual interest.

4. APPLY WOOD PANELS

From the ceiling to the floor, a good portion of this apartment is clad in wood panels. It adds to the warm, cosy ambience of the loft-like residence, while providing some textural contrast.

5. INJECT SOME LUXURY

What’s a loft without luxury? Take inspiration from this contemporary HDB flat when designing your bathroom. Instead of settling for a tiny washroom, go big with a free-standing tub and a wall-mounted flat-screen television!
