Ants: Sprinkle baby powder, ground pepper or ground chalk where you see them. A vinegar spray (mix three parts vinegar with one part water) around the perimeter of your garden can also keep ants from trekking into your home. If you find an ant hill, spray the mixture directly on the mound.

Mosquitoes: Citronella- whether in plant, candle or stick form- is best known to repel these dengue virus carriers. Rosemary is also a natural repellent against mozzies.

Cockroaches: Roaches hate the smell of bay leaves and catnip, so place some leaves in the corners of your home. Make a baking soda and sugar mixture, and spread it where roaches lurk. They will be attracted to the sugar and eat them. The baking soda will dehydrate them.

Flies: Fill plastic zip-top bags about half-full of water and hang them above outdoor entryways.
There are two theories as to why this trick works: 1) the clear water cast images that resemble spider’s webs, which flies avoid. 2) the light reflecting off the water disorients the flies so they head off elsewhere.

Rats: Douse cotton balls with peppermint oil (rodents hate the strong smell) and place them in around holes you suspect rats are entering.
Tip: Consider installing ultrasonic devices to deter rats from entering your home – while the high frequency sounds annoys them, it is inaudible to humans and pets.
