Raised by a single father, Fukuoka-based Japanese artist SIMON found it difficult to relate with schoolmates who often teased him for having feminine sensibilities.

Painting became his primary outlet of self-expression and artistic pursuit.

Today, the 25-year-old is an emerging artist, illustrator, painter, and print-maker known for his kawaii character Alien-chan.

Alien-chan transcends genders and embodies the Japanese kawaii aesthetics while dispensing messages of inclusivity.

“The works I draw are neither male nor female. It is a mixture of femininity and masculinity within me,” says SIMON. “They were born with an awareness of the destruction of stereotypes, knowledge that comes from some assumptions and people’s experiences, and freedom of ideas and freedom from restrictions.”

Most recently, SIMON’s works were displayed in the Alien Pop exhibition at the Industry+ showroom at Henderson.
