Born in Singapore in 1971, NAFA graduate Ming Wong trained in traditional Chinese painting and made a name as a playwright in the local theatre scene before obtaining a Masters in Fine Art from the Slade School of Art and London in 1999.

Ming is known for video installations and performances that reinterpreted iconic films, often casting himself in various roles.

Ming represented Singapore at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 with his solo exhibition, Life of Imitation, which won a special mention.

Today, Ming works and is based in Berlin.

His most recent work in Singapore is Wayang Spaceship, a full-scale Chinese opera theatre at Tanjong Pagar Distripark that shows a hybrid film that blends Cantonese opera and sci-fi movies.

Wayang Spaceship is part of the Singapore Art Museum’s The Everyday Museum, programme.

At daytime, the installation stands inconspicuously in the container seaport, while at dusk, it comes alive, activating the space with light, sound and film

Wayang Spaceship runs until Jan 31, 2023 at Container Bay, Rear Entrance of SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. The exhibit is accessible from 4–7pm daily with daily activations from 7.15–7.45pm. Enjoy $5 off your Gojek ride to SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark (39 Keppel Road) with the promo code, ‘GOSAM’.
