Do you know how much water Singapore consumes in a day? According to the PUB, Singapore is using approximately 430 million gallons every day. Residential homes make up 45 per cent of this amount, and this could double by year 2020, resulting in scarcity, if we do not practice water conservation.

More effort should be taken to conserve water, as this will help not just the environment, but also result in significant cost savings on home utility charges. So, what are some simple steps you can take to save water at home? Specialists at Econflo Systems — a distributor and retailer of well-known brands of sanitary ware and fittings — share some tips.

1. Check for leaks

A dripping tap can waste up to 15 litres of water a day, or 5,500 litres of water a year. If you spot a leak, quickly call your plumber to fix it!

2. Check the water efficiency label on sanitary ware and fittings before purchasing

The government has made it mandatory for manufacturers and suppliers of water fittings to disclose their products’ water consumption levels and usage efficiency. Under this scheme — Water Efficiency Labeling Scheme (WELS) — the grading system uses ticks to indicate water efficiency; three ticks being the most water efficient.

Duravit P3 Comforts Close-Coupled WC and Happy D.2 Wall Hung WC (left to right) have up to two ticks.

3. Install faucet aerators in the bathroom and kitchen

An aerator is one of the most effective and inexpensive tools for saving water at home. It is a small device attached to the tip of the faucet that controls the amount of water coming out.

4. Install water-efficient showerheads

Water used in the shower ranges from as much as 6 to 45 litres per minute. Consider getting an aerated showerhead, which combines water and air, or inserting a regulator in your shower, which puts an upper limit on flow rates.

5. Take shorter showers

If you are used to taking long showers, use a timer to keep track of time spent in the bathroom. Monitor your water bills to see how much water can be saved when you take quicker showers.
