The Dyson Cyclone V10 cuts a svelte figure with its iconic look and cordless frame, but can it live up to the outstanding form factor? Will it crumble under the intense road test put forth by the editor of Home & Decor Singapore? Here’s the blow-by-blow account.
What do you hate MOST about vacuuming the floor?
- Getting nagged to do it
- The noise
- Having to untangle the power cord
- Getting your hands all dirty when clearing out the dust bag
- Not being able to reach the narrow corners no matter how hard you try
- Lugging a heavy machine all over the house
- Finding that the floor is still dusty even though you’ve vacuumed the same spot countless times
- Or all of the above
I HATE vacuuming, but like most things in life it is a necessary evil, especially when you are moving into a new home. That was the situation I faced a couple of weeks back, when the interior designer handed over the keys of my new apartment.
Here are some shots of my new apartment
Along with the custom built-in cabinetry and newly painted walls, came a layer of dust comprising a mix of grouting material, sawdust and dirt brought in by the various workmen who had been walking around the house. A thorough wipe-down was necessary, but not before making sure that all the dust was properly cleared away.
Now we’ve all seen Dyson’s latest cordless vacuum, the Cyclone V10, in stores. It’s really hard to miss it, because Dyson’s vacuum cleaner looks really stylish and sleek. Looking like a space-age robotic arm equipped with a futuristic turbine core, the Cyclone V10 is a thing of absolute beauty to all sci-fi lovers and modern homeowners. What’s even better than its good looks, is the fact that the Cyclone V10 is cordless, freeing you from the trauma of dealing with a tangled wire or having to find a power source as you are cleaning from room to room. Weighing in at a mere 2.68kg, this handheld appliance feels light even after you’ve been holding it for 10 or 20 minutes. Also, that means the cordless vacuum is ideal for the homeowners of all ages. Best of all, the dust collector bin is clear so you really see all the dirt the vacuum sucks up.
Now if you’ve been disappointed with the suction power of cordless vacuums in the past, Dyson promises the Cyclone V10 is going to be the gamechanger. In fact, Dyson is so confident of the fact that this cordless vacuum offers equal (if not better) efficiency compared with other corded vacuum cleaners on the market, that the company has totally ceased production of full-sized vacuums. The Cyclone V10 features a smaller and lighter ceramic motor that is 20 per cent more powerful than its predecessor (the V8), but weighs half that of the V8’s digital motor. It spins up to 125,000 rpm or over 2,000 revolutions per second! That’s results in an incredible suction force!
Not only does the Cyclone V10 clean surfaces, it also helps to clean up the air too! Allergens and bacteria are kept within the unit, thanks to pre- and post-motor filters. Dyson claims that the V10 is capable of capturing up to 99.97% of microscopic dust. The filters are capable of trapping microscopic dust as small as 0.3 microns, so you can rest assured you are not going to breathe in any fine particles when vacuuming your space.
The road test
With a price tag of $1,199 (on the Dyson website), the Cyclone V10 is a definite investment but this is a worthwhile purchase because it’s actually going to make you (dare I say it) enjoy vacuuming the floor! That was what I discovered.
Unboxing the Cyclone V10 was a breeze, and I was impressed with various cleaner heads/brushes and attachments. It made me feel like the company really thought about the many areas in the home where the vacuum is used on and how to get to the narrow corners!
For a start, here’s what you get with the main unit:
Combination nozzle, crevice tool, direct-drive cleaner head, docking station, dusting brush, mini motorized tool, soft roller cleaner head
While the vacuum comes ready to use, users should charge it for three to four hours before using it for the first time. Once done, the battery gives up to 60 minutes of fade-free run time (on the low power setting). There are three power settings to choose from, but what I realised was the low setting offers ample power to pick up dust and hair from off the floor easily. Opt for the higher power settings when getting into deep corners of hard-to-reach spaces. I was blown away (pardon the pun) by the sheer amount of dirt the V10 picked up!
(Check out the amount of construction dust left behind after the renovation!)
Navigating around my new home was a breeze, because the cleaner heads can be easily rotated or turned in various directions. Toggling between the cleaner heads was also easy, just by clicking the attachments into place. All the buttons on the Cyclone V10 are in red colour too, so you know exactly what to press and how to use the unit. I love how user-friendly it is, even for people (like my mother) who have never used a Dyson vacuum before.
Another thing I noticed was how quiet the vacuum is. It is quiet enough for me to be cleaning up my living room in the middle of the night without getting complaints from the neighbours. Yes, it’s THAT quiet. This is a common issue for many homeowners, who work a regular day job and can only spend time at night to clean up their homes before hitting the sack. That also means this handy unit is a timesaver, which is crucial because in this day and age, time is money.
Hands free cleaning
You know how irritating it is when you are done vacuuming and have to tussle with the unit to clean out all the gunk from the dust collector bin? No matter how hard you try, some of the dirt will always end up spilling onto your hands (yuck) or on the floor. Well, the Cyclone V10 found a perfect solution for this! Dyson invented a rather ingenious ‘point and shoot’ bin emptying mechanism, so all you have to do is to hold the dust bin above the garbage bag and press the lever to release the bin’s cover at the bottom. In this way, your hands don’t have to get into contact with the dirt at all.
Hot or Not? I have to say Dyson Cyclone V10 is so so hot that I can’t stop vacuuming my floors! It’s just so gratifying and so therapeutic to see how much dirt the V10 can pick up, it’s possibly even better than watching Dr Popper’s pimple popping videos. I gave it a 9.5 out of 10 because it ticks all the boxes in my list for the perfect vacuum cleaner. I had to dock half a point only because I wish it was affordable enough for me to get another set for the office, but if you are looking for a vacuum cleaner that is a pleasure to use and operate, look no further.
