Just after five in the late afternoon is the magic hour. It’s when ties are loosened, sighs of relief fill the air and people leave their desks in search of a drink to take the edge off a long day.
With this in mind, the aptly-named Club 5 came to be. The subtly-lit, cosy yet luxurious bar in Parkroyal on Beach Road promises a reprieve from worldly stressors by being a haven for those seeking an escape to another place and another time. If the location sounds familiar, Club 5 isn’t a new face on the scene. It’s been around for a while but only reopened its doors in late November last year after a transformation.
Whether you’re a regular or new visitor, the redesign is bound to delight and – dare we say it? – even seduce. Conceptualised by award-winning interior designer Emma Maxwell, and complete with retro tiles and an ArtDeco-style bar to one side of the room, it looks like it belongs in the heady days of the 1920s. Bold, abstract wallpaper is complemented by the cool Hampton’s Blue of the walls. The overall feel is that of an intimate lounge, thanks to the plush upholstery and ebony parquet tables. Overhead, the ceiling is filled with tungsten lamps that give off a soft glow.
Guests can snuggle down into one of the plump sofas or perch themselves on a peacock-blue velvet stool at the marble-topped bar. Flanked by smoked mirrors, over 150 bottles of classics and in-house creations sit on shelves housed within three Art Deco-style gilded arches.
The drinks menu is no less nostalgic. Developed by head bartender Ong Jun Han, it has three main sections: Beach Road, Arab Street and Bugis Junction, with each being a tribute to its namesake in the old days.
The spices of Arab Street feature prominently in drinks like Nasi Lema’rgarita, a refreshing coconut-infused tequila cocktail served with anchovies and peanuts from the Arab Street line-up. Boogie Street (London dry gin, smoky mezcal, citrus, apricot brandy, agave and creme de violette liqueur) from the Bugis Junction list comes in a vintage coupe glass on a brightly sequinned coaster. And reminding us of our sandy shores is Beach Road’s High Tide Swizzle with fresh wheat vodka, cashew orgeat, passion fruit, burnt orange and vanilla, as well as citrus that’s a refreshing pleasure. “I believe every drink should have a story,” says Jun Han.
Diners will also be glad to know that the food menu is just as good. With classics like kuih pie tee and soft-shell crab served with Singapore chilli crab sauce, no one goes hungry in this bar.
